Make It Last Forever

I received a request that I am so thrilled about--it's a quote on marriage, which has been a topic I have studied much since my own wedding a little over a year and a half ago. I love being married. I love everything about it. My husband asked me the other day if I missed single life, and I couldn't think of one thing that I missed about it! Not to say that being single and graduated from college wasn't a blast, but I really enjoy the challenges and blessings of being married to my husband and being a mother to my first (and second in the womb!) child.

The quote comes from a talk by Elder F. Burton Howard in General Conference of April 2003. It says, "If you want something to last forever, you treat it differently. You shield it and protect it. You never abuse it. You don’t expose it to the elements. You don’t make it common or ordinary. If it ever becomes tarnished, you lovingly polish it until it gleams like new. It becomes special because you have made it so, and it grows more beautiful and precious as time goes by" (italics in original).

I very much believe that if you want something to last, it requires special care or attention. This goes for any relationship, your job/career, or even any temporal or physical item you may own. (For example, I want my nice church books to last, so I keep them on my high bookshelves so that my darling infant won't tear them to pieces.) I feel that my own marriage hasn't always been treated with the highest respect, and now I realize that in order to make it even more special, I need to make sure to never abuse it or neglect it.

Even if we haven't been perfect at taking care of our marriages (or any other relationship) up to this point, everything can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. He suffered and paid the price of all of our sins and misdoings so that we can repent and be made clean and whole. I can overcome my personal challenges if I give Him my heart and my will. Take time today to reevaluate how you can strengthen and make special the relationships that you love through Christ.
