James E. Faust wrote a talk before he passed away entitled "The Power to Change." In the talk, he talks about change through repentance, change through recovery from addictions, and change through conversion. He says, "The power to change is very real, and it is a great spiritual gift from God."
I am a HUGE fan and believer in the power to change. I have benefited so much from that truth of the gospel, as I am a person who has made many changes in my life. I am so grateful that built into the gospel of Jesus Christ is the Atonement, which is the true power to change. As I learned more about the Atonement and repentance, I learned that I can become whoever the Lord needs me to be and that all of my wrong-doings can be forgiven or made right.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when people treat me like the person I was instead of the person I am. I met with some high school friends a few years after graduation, and they acted like I was the same immature, selfish girl that I was back in high school. They didn't even give me a chance to prove how I had improved those behaviors and become a much better, deeper person. They had no clue that I had matured and grown and been forgiven of my weaknesses and sins. I left that evening feeling discouraged and slightly irritated. However, I learned from that experience that I always need to give people the opportunity to change, and never treat them as they were. It has helped me be non-judgmental and much closer to people, because others see that I am not predetermining who they are. I give them the grace I wish I was given more often.
Christ gives us the chance to change. He gives us the POWER to change. He says, "I'll take you as you are, but let me help you become more than you ever thought you could be." He never thinks we aren't good enough. He gives us all of the tools to become a little smarter, a little more spiritual, and a little more compassionate.
