Love at Home

With Valentine's Day being just a few weeks away, I'm sure many of you are prepping your homes for the holiday of love. You may be caught up in thoughts of kind acts of service, flowers, date nights with the one you love, and cute ways to tell your kids you love them. If so--good for you! Although I'm a firm believer that love should be celebrated every day, I do like that there is a special day set apart that we can make our loved ones feel extra special.

I also think it is so important that we focus on keeping love in our homes at all times. When someone walks into your home, they should think, "Wow, this is a home where I can feel the love that the members of the family have for one another." My husband and I have tried to make our home that way, and boy, I can tell you that when we aren't being especially loving and kind (or we're just being downright mean to each other), our home feels so much different. We have been trying to be more compassionate and loving so that our home can always maintain the Spirit.

Two LDS songs stuck out to me as I thought about printables to create for Valentine's Day: "Love at Home" and "Love is Spoken Here." Both have such amazing lyrics that inspire me to teach my children about righteous, Christlike love. I hope you can find a place in your home to display these printables as you share an added measure of love with your families this Valentine's Day.

How has a loving home environment been a blessing to your family?

I Am A Child of God

A few months ago, I had a friend who had her first baby. For her baby shower gift, I created a printable for her to hang in her nursery. I think every nursery and every home should have "I Am A Child of God" posted somewhere--because that's what we all are.

Today, I somehow came across information that said the LDS Primary theme for 2013 is "I Am A Child of God." I had no idea! I even had requests for the printable in different languages and didn't catch on...smart me. :)

I think this theme is beautiful. We are children of our Heavenly Father. He has a plan for us. We aren't here on Earth by mistake, but were sent here to learn and grow and become like our Father. Because we are His children, we know that we have a divine destiny. The Primary song illustrates our purpose here so well:

I am a child of God,
And he has sent me here,
Has given me an earthly home
With parents kind and dear.

Chorus
Lead me, guide me, walk beside me,
Help me find the way.
Teach me all that I must do
To live with him someday.

I am a child of God,
And so my needs are great;
Help me to understand his words
Before it grows too late.

I am a child of God.
Rich blessings are in store;
If I but learn to do his will,
I’ll live with him once more.

I am a child of God.
His promises are sure;
Celestial glory shall be mine
If I can but endure.

In honor of this year's Primary theme, here are 6 different color/animal versions of "I Am A Child of God" in 4 different languages--English, Italian, and Spanish....and now in Portuguese also!!

How has the knowledge that you are a child of God blessed you in your life?

Reach Your Goals

I got a really great request for a printable that is so applicable to this new year. Most of us set New Year's resolutions (see mine here), and within days or weeks, many of us realize that we have already "failed" at keeping them. So what motivates us or helps us achieve our goals realistically? What do we have to do?

Richard G. Scott said, "To reach a goal you have never before attained, you must do things you have never before done."

I love how simple this truth is. If you want to reach your goals, you have to do things that you haven't done, whether that be because of fears, because of lack of knowledge, etc. If I want to be healthy, I have to study healthy eating habits and patterns, then follow through with them by buying groceries I may have never purchased before, eating meals I've never eaten before, and saying no to sweets that I've never rejected before.

This is the same with gospel principles. If you have the goal to read your scriptures daily, you need to set aside time to read them, have a schedule of topics/chapters that you want to study, and you have to prioritize your time so you have no excuse not to read them. This may mean that you forgo social activities or media so you have time.

I can't wait to apply this principle for my resolutions!

What are you going to do that you have never done before to reach your goals?

A New Year - Visit Teach!

Happy New Year everyone! My husband and I are lame and were asleep before midnight last night (I blame it on the pregnancy and the busy 1 year old), but we still made sure to tell each other our New Year's resolutions.

This year, I am committed to doing 3 things: eating healthier, making my family my highest priority, and being a 100% visiting teacher.

I have teetered back and forth throughout my adult life with my consistency in visiting teaching. I have a very strong testimony about it and I have seen the joys that it brings, but there were just certain times in my life where it was not a high priority. That has changed over the last two years since I got married, and I am so glad that I have the privilege of being a visiting teacher.

The visiting teaching message this month is all about missionary work. As a returned missionary, I know the importance of members working with their friends and family to help them understand the gospel of Jesus Christ. I saw miracles happen as people reached out and shared their testimonies with others, and they saw the blessings their families received. The quote I chose from the message this month is by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf:

"The Lord…entrusts a testimony of the truth to those who will share it with others."

I believe that is true. I know that our testimonies grow as we share them, and I know that the members of Relief Society have the duty to help save souls. Souls are saved as we share the saving truths of the gospel.

How has your testimony grown as you have shared it with others?
